Sturgeon Lake at a glance

Sturgeon Lake is one of the smallest cities in Pine County, with 436 residents at the 2020 census, and the Census Bureau classifies all of them as rural. Interstate 35, County Road 46, and County Road 61, which doubles as Main Street, are the main routes. Moose Lake, in Carlton County, is about five miles to the north, and Willow River is about the same distance to the south.

The township around the city is large and thinly settled. Sturgeon Lake Township covers about 32 square miles, and the 2000 census counted roughly 13 people per square mile there.

Who handles septic rules in Sturgeon Lake

Pine County's jurisdiction sheet lists the county as the septic authority for both the City of Sturgeon Lake and Sturgeon Lake Township, for shoreland and non-shoreland parcels.

Large lots and private systems

In an area this sparsely settled, most homes outside the small city center depend on their own septic systems and their own wells. That makes both systems matter more to a buyer than they would in a town with municipal service, because nobody else is monitoring them. If you are looking at a property, ask the seller where the tank, the drain field, and the well are, and ask for a copy of the last compliance inspection. A well and the septic system near it have to be kept a safe distance apart, so ask where both are before you buy.

Large lots also tend to give a drain field room to be located well. That is an advantage when a system has to be replaced, because there is often space to put in a conventional field instead of a more complex design. It is still no substitute for a soil evaluation, and a lot with plenty of land can have wet or shallow soil in exactly the spot where you would like to put the system.

City boundaries have moved

Sturgeon Lake's city limits have changed over the years. State records show the city annexing about 51 acres from Sturgeon Lake Township in 1994 and another 8.75 acres in 1998. When land moves from a township to a city, the unit that handles building and septic matters can change with it.

That makes it worth confirming whether a property is currently in the city or the township before you apply for any permit, and asking where earlier septic records were filed. Pine County's jurisdiction sheet lists the county as the septic authority for both the city and the township, so the county is the place to start.

Winter at the north end of the county

Sturgeon Lake is in the northern part of Pine County, close to the Carlton County line, and winter is the season when frozen septic lines most often become a problem. Three conditions tend to combine. Snow cover that is thin or packed down lets frost reach deeper. Lines that are shallow or exposed, such as those near a driveway or under a path, freeze first. And a home that is empty or lightly used sends little warm water through the system.

If you own a cabin or hunting property here that you only use in some seasons, ask a pro how to leave the plumbing and system for winter. If a line does freeze, cut back on water use and call for help. Do not pour chemicals or antifreeze into the system, and do not use open flame.

Scheduling service in a spread-out area

With long distances between properties, it is worth asking a pro about scheduling and any travel charges when you book a pump-out or inspection. Grouping jobs, such as a pump-out and an inspection on the same visit, saves a trip. If you are selling, book the inspection early enough that a repair does not delay closing.

If you are in Sturgeon Lake, call or send a request and we will work on connecting you with an independent, licensed septic company that serves your area for pump-outs, inspections, repairs, or winter freeze-ups.

Questions about septic in Sturgeon Lake

Is my Sturgeon Lake property in the city or the township?

Check your tax statement or ask the county. The city has annexed township land in the past, so older records can show a different unit than the one that covers the parcel today.

Are most Sturgeon Lake homes on private septic systems?

In a thinly settled area like this one, most homes outside the city center are. If you are inside the city, ask whether your property is connected to a municipal system.

What should I do when a septic line freezes?

Cut back on water use and call a pro. Do not pour chemicals or antifreeze into the system and do not use open flame near it.

What should I check before buying rural property near Sturgeon Lake?

Ask where the septic tank, drain field, and well are, and ask for the latest compliance certificate and pumping receipts. Confirm whether the parcel is in the city or the township, and plan an inspection early enough to fix anything that turns up before closing.
